Lunch Box with Courtyard

The Row House in Sumiyoshi is the debut work of Tadao Ando, one of Japan's most renowned architects. The most distinctive feature of the spatial composition is the open “courtyard" in the middle. On rainy days, this house requires to use an umbrella to use the restroom across the courtyard. This bento box was made as a way to appreciate the open and closed spaces inspired from this architecture.

The first thing to do with this bento box is to taste it with your eyes. The cross-section of the bento box exposes the open courtyard allowing you to see the bed of rice and side dishes. Rekindle the excitement of opening the bento box. Not just from above, but also from the side.

Four separated rooms

#02

The bento box, separated into upper and lower sections, is further divided into two sections by a courtyard to make four spaces that are completely independent of each other, allowing the food to be enjoyed as it was intended. No more stewed dishes leaking and soaking up the fried dishes.

Chopsticks crossing the bridge

#03

Rice, side dishes, and back to rice again. This bento box has a “bridge” that connects the spaces divided by the courtyard. The chopsticks move back and forth between the rice and side dishes, just as residents move between their bedrooms and living room. This small “inconvenience”, is a design choice that allows you to take your time to appreciate the lunch time.
